The Historic Wayne Theatre

Newsletter

August 2007

The concerts on the front lawn are continuing. We haven’t had as big a crowd as we would have liked each week but the music has been fantastic. The construction on Michigan Avenue in front of the theater has slowed the cars down and they are hearing us as they drive by. The music some days is carrying pretty far and we have had comments that people on eastbound Michigan Avenue are listening to us on their front steps. We were rained out only twice so far and that’s a good thing.

We put out a booklet showing a little bit of the history of the theatre and a run down of all the concerts scheduled for the summer. We had to make changes to a few Saturday concerts because a couple of acts backed out for various reasons after the booklet was printed. We also are making a change to the Wheelfest weekend concert. We originally were going to do a karaoke show at the Wheelfest site but they wanted too much money for the tent and we couldn’t make a profit doing it their way. As a consequence, we are now setting up another concert at the theatre to go from about 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. It’s going to compete with the entertainment at the Wheelfest but we may get some people that don’t care for their show and like what we are doing better.

Our effort with Zachary and Associates who are working to write grants for us is starting to pay off. We had a meeting with them this month and they are confident we can get the money needed to address the dangerous building letter we got from the city. They will be meeting with the city officials sometime before our September meeting with the city to discuss when and how we will be fixing the theatre to satisfy the building officials.

We would like to start a group to help with fund raising called The Friends of the Theatre. This group would create and implement ideas to help raise money for the restoration of the theatre. They would not be board members and, like everyone else connected to the theatre, would not receive any money for their efforts, only our heartfelt appreciation. They could meet regularly and report their efforts to the board at each month’s board meeting.

That’s all I have to report for the summer but I’ll try to get another newsletter out as soon as we know for sure that we will be able to continue after the September 19th meeting. Until then, come out to our concerts on Saturday night. I’ve listed the concerts we have scheduled for the rest of the summer below. Lets us know that you read this in the newsletter and stay tuned for other fund raising events we may be doing over the fall and winter months.
