Concert provides KISS of good fortune

War Machine, a KISS tribute band, provided quite a thrill during the Beat the Bulldozer concert series on Saturday. The show packed the lawn of the Historic Wayne Theater and brought in an anonymous donation of $1,200.

“This was the best show we’ve ever had,” said Don Nicholson, capital fundraising chairman for the Historic Wayne Theater.

The group organizes a benefit concert every Saturday night to generate funds to bring the aging landmark up to code. Saturday, a large crowd turned out to welcome War Machine, a KISS tribute band and they weren’t disappointed.

“It was the best show we’ve had all season,” said Nicholson. “There was a good mix of people there and at the end, (singer) Kenny Mann invited the children up on stage while he sang ‘Beth.’ All the little girls got roses.”

The group faces a September deadline to bring the building up to code. The structure, constructed about 80 years ago, was cited by the city under the dangerous and blighted building ordinance a year ago. The ordinance seeks to force property owners to spruce up their property or demolish them.

The Beat the Bulldozer series takes place from 6-9 p.m. every Saturday on the lawn of the theater. This week, a classic rock tribute band, The Six Foot Poles, will perform, Nicholson said.

“They play from their souls and their hearts with a natural joy that can only come from the purest rock ‘n’ roll,” he said. “You might sum up the Six Foot Poles sound as vintage rock with a Motown twist.”

The concerts cost $10 or $5 for students and senior citizens. Anyone who buys a ticket will receive $5 discount coupon for the Henry Ford, according to Nicholson.

The organization is taking other donations, too. Saturday, they received a $1,200 donation from a Wayne resident who requested anonymity.

“It was very nice and we greatly appreciate it,” said Nicholson. “Hopefully we can get some other people to chip in.”
