Putting the 'fun' in fundraisers

Posted by Scott Spielman at 2:30 PM | Comments

The free summer concert series in the City of Wayne kicked off Thursday night.

Steve King and the Dittilies did the honors; their renditions of classic rock songs had three generations of Wayne residents dancing in Goudy Park or at least bobbing along in their chairs.

The concerts start every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. This year, in addition to all the theme nights, the concerts will provide a dropping point for the Pop 4 Play fundraiser. Throughout the summer, residents can donate their empty (and clean) returnables there and at city buildings to contribute to the Boundless Playground project.

This is a perfect idea for a fundraiser—although I feel sorry for the poor guy or girl who is given the task of returning the bottles for money. It helps residents clean up their homes and it takes the slow and steady approach to funding a worthwhile project. (The Boundless Playground idea is a fully handicapped accessible playground that will be developed at Soroptimist Park. It would be the first in the area).

You should have seen the eyes of the can collectors Thursday night when I approached. I finally got around to cleaning out my office (I consume a lot of energy drinks) and had two garbage bags stuffed with empties.

So take advantage of this fundraiser while it’s going on. It’s quick and a lot less hassle than returning the cans yourself. It’s for a good cause, too.

Speaking of good causes and good music, don’t forget to visit the Historic Wayne Theater at 6 p.m. (weather permitting) for their Beat the Bulldozer entertainment series. This week, Terror on the Red Carpet, Lying Eyes and Fall Prey are scheduled.
